MCB supports Team Maldives for 2015 Indian Ocean Island Games

Male, 12 July 2015: With 19 days to go before the 9th Indian Ocean Island Games start in Reunion, MCB today confirmed its support to Team Maldives. An agreement signed this afternoon between the Bank’s Managing Director, Gilles Marie Jeanne, and the President of the Maldives Olympic Committee, Mohamed Shaweed, positions MCB as the Official Bank of Team Maldives for the 2015 Games.

An ongoing partnership
MCB signing up as Official Bank is a logical step after the bank’s involvement with Team Maldives at the last Indian Ocean Island Games which were held in Seychelles. In 2011, Team Maldives won a total of six medals.

Flying the flag
As Official Bank, MCB proudly joins a whole nation of supporters. Through this sponsorship, the Bank salutes the country’s top athletes for their sustained efforts and wishes to boost the chances of Team Maldives of flying high the national flag in Reunion. It is reaffirming its commitment to the promotion of sports in Maldives. It also motivating the local population, and especially the younger generations, to practice sports even more. Since its establishment in 1838, MCB has always promoted sports as they vehicle some of its core values namely excellence, team work, integrity and knowledge.

Uniting the Indian Ocean
MCB has been a stalwart supporter of the Indian Ocean Island Games for more than 30 years and will be the top sponsor of the 2015 edition. This partnership is sensible as the Games are the most prominent sports event in a region where MCB is the leading banking and financial services provider. Each edition is a special occasion as it helps to unite the 25 million inhabitants of the Indian Ocean islands. It gives the region’s youth a platform to express itself and showcase its abilities while providing emotional rollercoaster rides to the population of every participating country.

A unique event
In 2015, Reunion will host the Games for the third time (after 1979 and 1988). The French dependency will welcome around 2000 athletes from Seychelles, Reunion, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte and Maldives. They will compete in 14 different sports, namely athletics, swimming, basketball, football, table tennis, volleyball, boxing, cycling, handball, judo, tennis, badminton weightlifting, and sailing.

Regional leader
